One of the most frequently asked questions when someone is on a metabolic meal plan designed for weight loss is what to do about constipation. Constipation may occur due to decreasing carbohydrate consumption. There is nothing wrong with having less frequent bowel movements as long as they are consistent and not painful.

In the instance that it has been an extended number of days or you are uncomfortable, there are several things you can do to combat this.

First and foremost is drinking plenty of water each day. A good rule of thumb is to drink half of your body weight in ounces every day. Ex. 200lb man/woman needs 100 ounces per day.

Secondly, "a salad a day keeps the constipation away".  Making sure that you have enough bulk to pass waste along your G.I. system will help you to stay more comfortable and regular.

The third thing you can try to combat constipation is to be on a regular probiotic. There has been a ton of really good scientific research released lately about all of the many benefits of gut health and taking a probiotic regularly. Good gut health can affect everything from directly seen G.I. issues all the way to preventing Alzheimer's disease.

The fourth way that you can avoid constipation is to take a calcium magnesium supplement and/or drinking Senna tea.

Constipation does not have to occur or be a roadblock when on a healthy metabolic meal plan. By using the tips listed above you can continue on your road to weight loss and better health.
